Read-1, THE ADJUSTMENT
1. Interactions between Nana and Nani as Observed: by the Writer
- The writer observed that Nana and Nani always grumble at each other, yet there was a strong attachment between them.
- At the age of eighty-five, Nana would keep quibbling with Nani, as if they had just married and they were trying to understand each other.
- Some times this quarrel would push them into long silence.
- The writer says it was fun listening to Nana talk to Nani.
- Nani was the only human who got her way with Nana.
- Nana would say that he was older than she he would die earlier; in reply, Nani said that he would see who will die first.
- Thus, mostly, they did not agree to each other.
2. Justify the Title ‘The Adjustment’ OR
The Title - Adjustment (March 18, July 18)
- In ‘The Adjustment’, the writer shows us a typical old couple who tries to adjust to each other in whole story.
- The eighty-five-years-old Nana and Nani hardly agrees to each other yet there is a hidden love between them.
- Mostly they quarrel and stop talking with each other for days together. Yet, Nana says that it happens because it takes a time to understand each other.
- Nani dies earlier than Nana and Nana does not join in cremation. So he keeps himself in the room.
- When Nani’s ashes were taken for the immersion, Nana just touched the urn and asked “take him away, he just quarrel with me”
- Nana becomes a victim of a sort of dissociative personality disorder.
- At the end of the story, Nana is found sleeping in Nani's dhoti and blouse.
- Thus, the title ‘The Adjustment’ seems to be the most appropriate.
(3) The Narrator's Relief after Meeting Dr K. D. Kami (March 19)
- The writer was very much disturbed, when Nana behaving strangely after the death of Nani.
- Nana did everything as Nani did in her life.
- He spoke like Nani, He drank medicines like he were Nani.
- Then the writer met his friend Dr. Kamble. He was a psychiatrist.
- Dr. Kamble visited Nana and talked to Nana; He observed Nana and told the writer that he did not believe that
- Nani was dead.
- He begun to live a double life and it is more of her and less of him. Nana had begun to think himself as Nani. He was suffering from a sort of dissociative personality disorder.
- Dr. Kamble told the writer that at his age, the recovery was nearly impossible.
- So, Dr. Kamble advised the writer “Let him live his life any way he wanted to”.
- After hearing this, the writer felt relieved.
